Frequently asked questions about fleet management
What is Fleet Management and what do the terms telemetry and telematics mean in this context?
Fleet management is divided into the two areas of telemetry and telematics. Both areas deal with data transmission over longer distances, but have different functions.
Telemetry comprises the automatic measurement and transmission of data for monitoring and analysis, even over long distances. This includes the collection of sensor data and its transmission. This transmission can take place via wire, radio or optical transmission methods. In addition to its use in space travel, for monitoring the weather or patients in the medical sector, telemetry is also used in logistics.
Telematics also includes telecommunications and IT for the transmission, reception and processing of data. This area is primarily used in vehicle communication and modern traffic management. It is primarily used to achieve automation.
Which solutions fall under fleet management?
With our solution, we offer a mobile workplace. This means that every driver is involved in the process. In contrast to earlier times, when it was only a matter of locating and monitoring vans, drivers now have insights into all these areas thanks to fleet management:
- complete order
- entire route management
- Digitized photos, signatures, documents
- Control over departures
With these modern fleet management solutions, we improve our customer service (e.g. precise documentation of “ETA” Estimated Time of Arrival compared to the actual arrival time).
What can be achieved through digital fleet management and what are the resulting benefits?
The advantages of digital fleet management lie in the following aspects:
- Optimized trip planning
- Professional management for maintenance and servicing
- Precise fuel consumption control
- Compliance with statutory rest periods
- Perfect data synchronization
Are there any disadvantages to digital fleet management?
Yes, there are still gaps in mobile communications within Germany. For example, dead spots are still a problem for digital fleet management. The different nationalities and languages of drivers can also present a hurdle. . Furthermore, the user group is not homogeneous in terms of its affinity for digital solutions. Many drivers prefer digitalized processes, but some less so. Ultimately, however, the technology can be learned quickly by anyone.
How does telemetry work? Which devices are required?
Telemetry works via GPS tracking and data transmission via mobile radio. A black box is installed in the truck via FleetGO telemetry and connected to the vehicle electronics (read mode). At WANKO, we use Android or Iphone cell phones with scanners. No cabling is necessary here.
What types of fleets is modern fleet management suitable for?
