LDB Logistik: Optimizing at eye level

For the digitalization of all warehouse processes and end-to-end data exchange with its customers, the Baden-based logistics service provider LDB has been relying on the PraMag warehouse management system from Wanko for over 10 years.

Digitization and optimization is an ongoing process for Torsten Fellmoser. The managing director and owner of the Baden logistics group LDB therefore maintains close contact with his IT partners. At least once a week, project manager Manuela Fellmoser meets virtually with Wanko, the supplier of the PraMag warehouse management system (WMS) used at LDB. “There are always new ideas or new customer ranges that we want to integrate into our processes in the best possible way at our warehouse locations in Bühl and Rastatt,” explains Manuela Fellmoser. “With Wanko, we have an IT partner at eye level who understands our requirements and implements them promptly.”

This applies, for example, to the addition of new customers and the associated setup of an interface between PraMag and the respective merchandise management system. “Every customer transmits their order data in different ways. Together with Wanko, we adapt to this – and it works really well,” confirms Fellmoser.

Integrated register of hazardous substances

One of the more recent results of the collaboration is the hazardous substances register created in 2022 in accordance with the Hazardous Substances Ordinance (GefStoffV). The directory integrated in PraMag knows all hazardous substances stored at LDB and their exact storage locations. In the event of an accident, the safety and protective measures that need to be taken can be determined immediately. This is an extremely important function for the Bühl site: 30 percent of the goods stored here are hazardous substances.

Transparency with regard to storage locations is one of the basic benefits of Pra-Mag and the associated scanning of all goods movements. Here, LDB relies on robust Android scanners from Zebra, which are equipped with the PraMag app. The scanner displays provide employees with clear information and instructions to guide them safely through each process. “At PraMag, the focus is always on specific tasks such as picking or packing. This feature convinced me right from the start,” recalls Fellmoser, who had looked at several systems before investing in the WMS.

Simplified shipping

The MDEs are mainly used for the 400 or so pick jobs that are carried out every day. Depending on the volume, the picked consignments are handed over to the in-house forwarding agent, an external transport company or a CEP service provider. For this purpose, Wanko has connected DHL-Paket, DHL-Freight and GLS via an interface. This means that the correct shipping labels are automatically printed out at the various packing tables and the respective service providers are informed about the collection. PraMag is also connected to the BlueCargo transport management system used by sister company LDB Transport. Data can thus be easily transferred from logistics to the transportation sector.

Storage and retrieval in the manual high-bay warehouse, which is operated by a semi-automatic narrow-aisle forklift from Jungheinrich, has also been significantly accelerated. This receives the movement commands with the exact storage coordinates directly from PraMag. The pending order appears on the forklift terminal, which is an industrial-grade tablet from Honeywell. The driver only has to confirm the order on the tablet, which automatically transfers it to the truck controller. The Jungheinrich then moves automatically to the desired shelf compartment. Even scanning the pallet can be dispensed with in this process. An accelerated process that eliminates errors.

"The services offered in the customer portal are constantly being expanded in collaboration with Wanko"

Customers better informed

There is also an interface between PraMag and the customer portal developed specifically for LDB. This allows customers to find out about shipment progress, the number of parcels handled and current stock levels or download delivery receipts. “The services offered in the customer portal are constantly being expanded in collaboration with Wanko,” says Fellmoser. After all, you would like to offer your customers the data that PraMag provides anyway.

Conclusion: Thanks to the close cooperation between LDB and Wanko as two medium-sized companies, the logistics service provider’s warehouse management is constantly adapted to new challenges and customer requirements. A lively process that is characterized by trusting cooperation.
